Context7 MCP Server: Connect Live Docs to Claude and AI Agents

Use Context7's MCP server to give Claude, Cursor, and other AI tools direct access to up-to-date library documentation via the Model Context Protocol.

What Is MCP?

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is a standard for connecting AI models to external data sources. Instead of manually copying documentation, MCP lets your AI tool pull information automatically.

Context7 as an MCP Server

Context7 provides an MCP server that integrates directly with compatible AI tools. This means Claude, Cursor, and other MCP-aware tools can automatically fetch the latest documentation for any library — no manual copy-paste needed.

Setting Up Context7 MCP

With Claude Desktop

Add Context7 to your Claude Desktop MCP configuration:

json
{ "mcpServers": { "context7": { "command": "npx", "args": ["-y", "@context7/mcp"] } } }

With Cursor

Cursor supports MCP servers natively. Add Context7 in your Cursor settings under the MCP configuration section.

How It Works in Practice

Once connected, you can ask Claude or Cursor:

> "Using the latest Next.js 15 docs, show me how to implement middleware for authentication."

The AI will: 1. Query Context7's MCP server for Next.js 15 middleware documentation 2. Receive the current, accurate documentation 3. Generate code based on the real API

No manual doc pasting. No hallucinated APIs. Just accurate answers.

Use Cases

Multi-Library Projects

Working with Next.js + Prisma + Stripe? The MCP server can pull docs from all three simultaneously, giving the AI accurate context across your entire stack.

Library Migrations

Upgrading from React 18 to 19? The AI can reference both versions through Context7, understanding what changed and generating migration-compatible code.

Learning New Frameworks

Starting with a new library? The AI has access to the complete, current documentation — tutorials, API references, and examples.

Why This Matters for AI Agents

If you're running an AI agent (like OpenClaw), MCP integration means your agent can write code using current documentation automatically. No human in the loop to paste docs — the agent queries Context7 directly.

This is the future of AI-assisted development: AI tools that know they need current docs and fetch them automatically.
